color photograph
Very good condition with curled slightly with age.
Group photo of university administrators with Nova Scotia Premier Gerald Regan. Front row (l to r): Laurie Smith (Arts class of 1943, here Administrative Vice President and Director of Admissions), Edmund Morris (former mayor of Halifax, assistant to the President, SMU President 1970-1971), Premier Gerald Regan, Father G.W. Tait (Vice President Academic), J.L. Ryan (Dean of Engineering), and George Burpee Hallett (BA and MA from Dalhousie University, SMU English faculty 1960-1997, here Dean of Arts). The first two gentlemen in the back row remain unidentified. The man on the far right, behind Father Tait, has been identified as John P. Parker. He was assistant to Edmund Morris. As a student, he was president of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, president of the Liberal Club, and on Student Council.
Photo came from the widow of Laurie Smith, and was given to the Archives by Dr. Colin Dodds (Vice President, Academic and Research 1991-2000, SMU President 2000-2015). Accompanying the picture was a business card from Colin Dodds with a handwritten note that reads: 'Hansel this photo was given to SMU by the widow of Laurie Smith with the names on the back.' Names of 8 of the 9 men are written on the back of the photo, but one name is illegible. The names of the three men do not specify which is which. That is why John Parker could not be identified as no other picture of him could be found at time of accessioning this group photo. Date determined by the fact that Edmund Morris became interim President in 1971 and Owen Carrigan was appointed SMU President officially on July 1, 1971.
