With Kevin Cleary (Arts class of 1957, Registrar 1963-1973, Secretary to the Senate) at left, Archbishop Hayes (Arts class of 1943, Chancellor 1970-1980, light coloured robe) and honourary degree recipient Jean Allard (seated, first French-Canadian Chief of Defence Staff) look on as a young Walter O'Hearn Jr. accepts an honourary Doctor of Letters from Rev. Labelle (right, SMU President 1967-1970) on behalf of his deceased father. "Wal" O'Hearn was one of the Arts class of 1930 (see pg. 7 of the 1930 Collegian yearbook).
Found on pg. 1 of Maroon & White with following caption: 'At the fall convocation, honourary degrees were conferred upon Walter D. O'Hearn (posthumously), Victor deBedia Oland, Thomas Head Raddall and Jean Victor Allard. In picture Walter D. O'Hearn Jr. receives the degree on behalf of his late father (October 1969)'.
