The focus of this paper is the narrative construction of the nongovernmental organization (NGO) by the United Nations. How the NGO is narrated by a legitimate institution like the UN is critical for both the sustainability of NGOs and the social benefit that is created by such organizations. This is because the allocation of resources to NGOs is directly affected by that narrative. The data come from the 20 speeches of the 54th annual conference (2001) titled as “NGOs today: Diversity of the Volunteer Experience” at the UN headquarters.

The spatial search capabilities of web-based business directories provide locational information to directory-using customers on the whereabouts of businesses with consumer-targeted products and services. This article compares the performance of two web-based directories with respect to their provision of transaction-supporting locational information. Results reveal considerable variability in performance both within and across the two directories with respect to a group of 120 businesses in an industrial setting where ‘location’ is generally a material transactional concern. The article discusses the findings and identifies areas for further research.

This study focuses on the marketing orientation and the impact of marketing orientation on the performance of 21 firms in the Top 101 Atlantic firm ranking by Atlantic Progress Magazine. Using the MARKOR scale in a mail survey, the research analyzed the level of marketing orientation among leading Atlantic firms, and its impact on organizational performance. The results were then compared to those in the literature using international studies based on the MARKOR scale for marketing orientation. An analysis using the MARKOR marketing orientation scale revealed that leading firms in Atlantic Canada varied little from the firms other with regards to the causes and impacts of marketing orientation.

The purpose of this paper is to explore Joan Acker’s system of gendering processes and to assess the potential of this framework to help researchers better identify those activities in and around organizations that maintain, support, or oppose their gendered nature. It is anticipated that a thorough understanding of these processes will be instrumental in effecting change.

Recognizing the textbook as a central, and significantly evolved, element of modern university education, this research attempts to address the lacunae that exist within our understanding of textbooks as pedagogical tools. Specifically, this exploratory research addresses questions pertaining to textbook development over time, textbook use by students, and the relationships that exist between the textbook, the educator and the student.

How can organizations in contractual engagements mitigate their risk and increase partner satisfaction when the engagement may not last long enough to forge ‘traditional’ bonds of trust? We investigate perceptions of contract specificity, organizational similarity, contract monitoring costs, operational flexibility and fair treatment as antecedents to partner satisfaction. We empirically test our hypotheses using data collected on 72 contractual engagements from Canadian consulting engineering firms. Our results indicate that firms are likely to be more satisfied when they partner with organizations with which they have had a previous satisfying experience. Furthermore, written contracts with overly excessive specifications can have a negative effect on satisfaction.
