Descartes and the correspondence theory of truth

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine that portion of the philosophical doctrine of René Descartes containing his reaction to and alternative for the traditional theory of human knowing which shall be called the “Correspondence Theory of Truth”, for reasons to be set down shortly. The study is divided into five main sections as follows: Chapter One is the introduction which first draws a distinction between the ancient or classic “Correspondence Theory of Truth” and a modern theory of the same designation. Having made this distinction, the introduction then proceeds to give an historical sketch of the traditional theory of knowledge. Chapter Two provides a more elaborate account of the classic Correspondence Theory of Truth, giving justification for the terminology “correspondence”. Chapter Three contains Descartes’ reasons for his reaction against correspondence theory. Chapter Four examines critically Descartes’ alternative for the position he attacks. The Fifth and final Chapter compares Descartes’ theory of truth with the classic theory of truth.
