dc.description.abstract The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Chilean National Commission on Truth and Reconciliation in bringing about truth, justice and reconciliation. These institutions aim to help states address how to contend with gross violations of human rights under the previous regime. Based on literature and interview data with Chileans on the perceptions of the results and impacts of the truth commission, this thesis concludes that the Chilean National Commission on Truth and Reconciliation can be considered an example of a successful commission which, to varying degrees, fulfilled its mandate over the short and long-term. en_CA
