Abstract:
When the United Way of Halifax Region received an unsolicited gift from a tobacco company, the organization faced a dilemma. With no formal gift acceptance policy in place, the Board of Directors had to decide whether or not they should accept the donation. This is a problem-based case study where students must decide whether or not the Board of Directors should accept the donation. Included in the case is information that supports both sides of the debate, and the reader must engage in extensive analysis and reflect on personal and organizational values before making a conclusion. The case was designed for use in a business ethics or business and society course, and would also be relevant for any business course that encompasses
