"September 11-39
My dear Janie,
This is just a note to say I received your two letters.
I am extremely busy organizing my company to full war strength.
Painting and sailing and all good things have come to a sad end.
I am looking forward to see you [sic]. I need cheering up, and you will be the one.
We are all busy getting ready to serve our country.
Henry Howard is leaving on the 23 of this month for some part of Canada to train for the winter. What will become of our Company I do not know?
Looking forward to see [sic] you,
I remain
Your Loving friend,
Tony"
