dc.description b&w photograph
dc.description Very good condition with a little rounding up at the edges and names written in blue ink on photo.
dc.description Group photo of 13 boys in two rows (1 row standing, 1 row sitting on chairs), found on pg. 41 of the 1922 Santamarian yearbook under the uninformative caption "Students '21-22." Bill Finn is in the back row (third from right) and Gerry Hayes (future teacher at Saint Patrick's Boys' High School) is in the front row (third from right). In 2015 J. Mills identified two boys in the back row: William Burns (fourth from left) and Harry Durney (second from right, a future Reverend). Both participated in senior level sports (see pg. 119-120), and Burns was a member of the combined first and second year Arts debating team. Right Rev. William Burns (Arts class of 1923) enjoyed a distinguished career as Vicar General to the diocese's Bishop (exercising executive powers) from ca. 1942-1959. He also served on Saint Mary's Senate and as Vice Chancellor ca. 1951-1959. As of 2017, it is not possible to pinpoint these dates more accurately. Three more boys were recognised from 98.04.0448. The other boys cannot be identified because frustratingly, the 1922 yearbook does not list the boys' names in any photo, nor does it specify the class subject of any group photo. This photo is identical to 98.04.0450.
dc.description Gerald A. Hayes attended Saint Mary's from 1916-1923. He is the founder and first editor for St. Mary's Tatler in 1922. He continued on to be the Alumni editor of the Collegian as well as teacher (Saint Patrick's Boys' High School), secretary and president of the alumni. In 1935 he was appointed to the Senate of the college where he was the youngest member to be elected. Additionally Hayes was the coach for the intercollegiate hockey and rugby teams, leading both teams to numerous championships. Hayes obituary found on page 66 of the 1935 Collegian.Appears in Saint Mary's University: An Anniversary Portrait by Anne West on page 23. Photo copyright held by the Archdiocese of Halifax Archives.
