dc.description b&w nitrate
dc.description Very good condition: top right corner bent, scratch beside first boy from right in second row, stain on first boy from right in third row, mark on face of fourth boy from left in back row, and remnants of matte on reverse.
dc.description Group photo of 23 boys with Brother Grangel in four rows (2 standing, 1 sitting on chairs, 1 sitting on the floor). Gerry Hayes is in the second row, far right, and William Burns is in the third row, third from the right. Identities confirmed by J. Mills in 2016. Publication of the yearbook was suspended from 1914-1920 likely due to wartime and immediate post-war paper shortages: a patriotic gesture by the College (see pg. 13 and 93 in the 1921 Santamarian yearbook). Right Rev. William Burns (Arts class of 1923) enjoyed a distinguished career as Vicar General to the diocese's Bishop (exercising executive powers) from ca. 1942-1959. He also served on Saint Mary's Senate and as Vice Chancellor ca. 1951-1959. As of 2017, it is not possible to pinpoint these dates more accurately.
dc.description Gerald A. Hayes attended Saint Mary's from 1916-1923. He is the founder and first editor for St. Mary's "Tatler" in 1922. He continued on to be the Alumni editor of the Collegian as well as the secretary and president of the alumni. In 1935 he was appointed to the Senate of the college where he was the youngest member to be elected. Additionally Hayes was the coach for the intercollegiate hockey and rugby teams, leading both teams to numerous championships. Hayes obituary found on page 66 of the 1935 Collegian.
dc.description Written in black on reverse: '5' and '3rd Collegiate 1918-1919.' Written in pencil on reverse: '3d Collegiate,' '19,' '1915-16?' and '32.0.' Came in white mat with '32.0' written in pencil on reverse. From Art Gallery.
